The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.
This included attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His son, his son Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of his transfer to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 13km from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, prompting him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that he be authorized to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Background on Conviction
He was convicted of heading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. The current president was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 national vote.
