The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
